Like the wildly popular
Manhattan Island Marathon Swim and the ever-increasingly popular
English Channel solo and relay channel, the
Whiskey Joe's 13th Annual 24 Mile Tampa Bay Marathon Swim remains a popular stop on the global marathon swimming schedule - especially given its spring date in the lead-up to the Northern Hemisphere's summer season.
The race will be held April 17th in 2010 and entries are now being accepted - click
here. The event has been staged annually since 1998 to celebrate the revitalization of Florida's largest estuary and covers the entire 24-mile (38.6K) length of Tampa Bay and ends at
Whiskey Joe's Bar and Grill.
Ron Collins, the
Tampa Bay Marathon Swim race founder and director, also runs an
Open Water Boot Camp that offers open water training sessions. While Florida may have a reputation for very warm water, qualifying swims for the
English Channel or
Manhattan Island Marathon Swim are possible in Florida's winter waters where temperatures at
Clearwater Beach in January and February usually hover around 60°F (15.5°C).
