Bill Welzien, founder of the Swim around Key West, completed a 10 hour 25 minute solo crossing of the 21K (13-mile) Sea of Galilee (also known as the Lake of Gennesaret, Lake Kinneret or Sea of Tiberias (Hebrew: ים כנרת), (Arabic: بحيرة طبريا), on September 2nd.
Bill set off in glassy sea just east of the Jordan River in 83˚F (28˚C) waters.
"I initially thought this swim would take 8 hours, but I was surprised when 8 hours came and went and I was still swimming. I had to reconcile myself that every stroke I was one closer. [Despite swimming a total of 23K from the northernmost tip to the south], I am sore, but no damage for the wear."
