This Saturday, the 39th annual Bernie Butler BASRA Swim and Beach Party will be held on Grand Bahama Island. The Bernie Butler BASRA Swim helps raise funds to support the Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association (Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association).A video of last year's race can be viewed here. A typical fun-filled ocean swimming event: food, family, sun, sea, swells and sand.

I did this race several times in the late 80s early 90s while on vacation there with my family. It's truly the most visually appealing ocean race I've ever done. The race is a point-to-point and the water is about 10 feet deep the whole way. You go right over several coral formations and there are fish everywhere. It's like snorkeling at high-speed and you'll feel very tempted to stop and check things out. When I did the race, anyone not living on the island had to compete in the 'unofficial' category but I'm not sure that's still the case.

I've done the race for the past couple years and its still going strong. You dont have to swim unofficial as long as you are a registered swimmer of some kind where you are from. its a great race and looking forward to it this saturday
