The 2009 World Swimming Championships will be held in Rome between July 18 - August 2 where pool and open water swimming, water polo, diving and synchronized swimming will be contested. The men’s and women’s 5K is on July 19; the women’s 10K is on July 21; the men’s 10K is on July 22; the women’s 25K is on July 24 and the men’s 25K race is on July 26.
Each national swimming federation is only allowed a maximum of four athletes (2 male + 2 women) in the 5K, 10K and 25K events.
The Germans are selecting their athletes based on the German Open Water Swimming Championships that will be held in the Bodensee near Lindau in late June.
The Australians and New Zealand are both selecting their athletes based on the Australian Open Water Swimming Championships that will be jointly held in the Australian Open and Age Open Water Swimming Championships in the Sydney International Regatta Centre between February 28 and March 2.
The Americans and Canadians are both selecting their athletes based on the World Team Trials that will be jointly held as part of the Open Water Festival and National Championships in Ft. Myers in western Florida on June 14.
