Australia's triple gold medalist Stephanie Rice joins fellow Olympic individual medley specialist Keri-Anne Payne and Keri-Anne's fellow open water Olympic medalists Cassandra Patten, David Davies, Larisa Ilchenko and Thomas Lurz at the inaugural Great London Swim at The Royal Victoria Dock today.
While thousands of swimmers of all abilities and ages will have the rare opportunity to race against an outstanding field, the willingness of these world-class athletes to compete in events outside of their Olympic specialities is admirable - and is helpful to the sport.
The Great Swim director Colin Hill said, "Our vision for Great Swim was to inspire people into trying outdoor swimming for the first time as well having the world's best competing in the same event."
Goal achieved.
