Cadiz Freedom Swim Delayed Record

Olympic 10K swimmer Natalie du Toit broke a 22-year-old record at the 7.5K Cadiz Freedom Swim in South Africa this past weekend, despite very trying conditions.

Natalie won in 1 hour and 35 minutes, less than a minute in front of the men's winner, Tyron Venter.

After a postponement of the race on Saturday due to strong winds and adverse ocean conditions, the 275 solo and relay swimmer gathered again on Sunday only to face another delay of nearly 4 hours due to a heavy fog.

When the fog finally lifted, the swimmers jumped into the 13°C (55.4°F) waters - with possible Great White sharks - to traverse 7.5K from Robben Island* to the finish at Blouberg's Big Bay.

Typical to her thoughtful nature, Natalie said that although she was delighted to win, she felt privileged to have participated in an event which raised funds for the children of Vista Nova School.
