Michael Dmitriev (shown below), an Israeli who trains in Texas and who recently won the 15K FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix in Viedma, Argentina, will reportedly join the field at the 10K Nike Swim Miami in April.
This brings another accomplished swimmer to Nike Swim Miami where athletes can compete in 1-mile, 5K and 10K races. Swimmers from Florida, Tennessee, New Jersey, Michigan, Missouri, California, Georgia, Massachusetts, Texas and New Hampshire are already committed to the event with rumors swirling that several other top swimmers from North Carolina, California, Venezuela and South Africa will also attend.
With the 2009 World Swimming Championships to be held in Rome, the American and Canadian national team qualification race will be held in June. This means the Nike Swim Miami has special significance for top athletes getting ready for the qualifier, as well as providing an early-season competition on the American open water swimming calendar.
