Open Water Swimming in the Arizona Desert

How big is open water swimming? There is now a 5-event Open Water Swim Series in the desert of Arizona.

Arizona?!? The southwestern state, known for its cactus, the Grand Canyon and desert heat ranging from 32–52°C (90–125°F), only became a U.S. state in 1912, but is no latecomer to the world of open water swimming.

DCB Extreme Adventures, an endurance sports event management company, organizes the Arizona Open Water Swim Series throughout the state.

Next year, Arizona Open Water Swim Series #1 will be held on May 2nd in Saguaro Lake (east of Phoenix), Arizona Open Water Swim Series #2 on June 6th in Lake Pleasant (near Phoenix), Arizona Open Water Swim Series #3 on September 19th in Saguaro Lake, Arizona Open Water Swim Series #4 on October 17th in Lake Pleasant Marina (near Phoenix), and Arizona Open Water Swim Series #5 on November 15th in Tempe Town Lake (near Arizona State University).

Swimming World Magazine, ever diligent and timely on its coverage of trends and events in the aquatic world, covered the 2008 2.4-mile Tempe Town Lake swim on its Morning Swim Show TV program. Peter Busch covered the swim here on the Morning Swim Show.
