Fiji Swimming announced its annual awards at its 2008 Milo Fiji Swimming Awards Night held November 22nd. In a rarity for national swimming federations, an open water swimmer, Douglas Miller of the Tritons Swimming Club of Suva, was awarded Male Swimmer of the Year in addition to being awarded Fiji's Open Water Swimmer of the Year and Freestyler of the Year. The Open Water Swimmer of the Year award was in recognition of his solo 18K Fiji Swim from Nadi's Sofitel Hotel to Beachcomber Island (see below) in four hours and 56 minutes.
Douglas has the right DNA for open water swimming – his father is long-time FINA Technical Open Water Swimming Committee member, Dennis Miller.
