World Record Swim Attempt in Western Australia

On November 29, 2008, the swimming community of Western Australia will attempt to set a Guinness World Record in the category of "most participants in an open water race". In January 1998, the community of Lorne, Victoria in Australia set the current record when 3,071 swimmers completed the Pier to Pub race.

The ECU West Coast 1000 World Record Swim hopes to field up to 5,000 participants to swim 1km in the inaugural ECU West Coast 1000.

Participants will be seeded in groups of approximately 500 swimmers and will depart Cottesloe Beach on foot to the starting point at North Cottesloe. Each swim group will enter the water at timed intervals for the return swim to Cottesloe. All participants will be timed electronically so that the world record and category winners can be verified.
