The International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame also welcomed Charles E. Silvia of the USA to its Class of 2008:
Charles Silvia was a highly successful swim coach at Springfield College in Massachusetts from 1937 to 1978. In addition to his coaching, he taught Swimming & Lifesaving and authored several books on the subject. He was always available for swimmers at all skill levels and assisted with the training of several New England marathon swimmers training for local meets or the English Channel. He was instrumental in the organization and conduct of many local marathon swimming meets. Considered his greatest contribution is the multitude of individuals he taught to swim, not for medals and honors, but for fitness and pleasure.
