German Sweep At The European Cup

Christian Reichert and Gina Mohr, both of Germany, wrapped up their 2009 titles at the European Open Water Swimming Cup final in Marmaris in Mugla on the Turkish Riviera.

Defending champion Christian Reichert was the fastest in both the 10K final and the 5K time trial with a total time of 2:05:09.

In the overall season standing, Christian finished with 80 points over Belgium's Brian Ryckeman with 63 and Germany's Andreas Waschburger with 62 points.

On the women's side, Germany's Gina Mohr won the overall title with 63 points over Spain's Marta Recio with 54 points and Nika Kozamernik of Slovenia with 52 points. Christian and Gina combined to give Germany its third consecutive male-female overall double title in the 2009 European Open Water Swimming Cup that offered a total prize purse of 21,000 Euros.

The swimmers had competed in six races in the 2009 European Open Water Swimming Cup (results posted here). The individual series winners included the following:

Leg 1 - 10K in Eilat, Israel in May:

Keri-Anne Payne (GBR) 2:04:27.25

Leg 2 - 5K in Isolo del Giglio, Italy in June:
Luca Ferretti (ITA) 47:23.00
Yurema Requena (ESP) 51:02.60

Leg 3 - 10K in Porec, Croatia in July:
Christian Reichert (GER) 1:57:52.00
Teja Zupan (SLO) 2:10:21.00

Leg 4 - 10K in Hoorn, Netherlands in August:
Christian Reichert (GER) 2:00:47.23
Linsy Heister (NED) 2:06:21.65

Leg 5 - 10K in Navia, Spain in August:
Christian Reichert (GER) 0:56:06.40
Margarita Dominguez (ESP) 1:00:02.40

Final - 10K and 5K time trial in Marmaris, Turkey in September:
Christian Reichert (GER) 2:05:09.58
Marta Recio (ESP) 2:20:35.29

Just a little commentary, Steven; LEN European Open Water Swimming Cup Race in Navia finally was over 5 km, in spite of being initially scheduled over 10 kms. You have a video of the competition here:
