The 12-part Axxess DSL Ocean Racing Series, organized by Michael Zoetmulder of Zports has become Africa's largest family beach event through innovative marketing and its great community outreach programs. During each of the 12 races, Zports helps bring a dream alive for a child who has a life-threatening illness from the Reach for a Dream Foundation.
The Axxess DSL Ocean Racing Series has also established the Masakhane Future Stars program where up to 150 children from the historically disadvantaged communities are given the opportunity to participate in regular water sport activities (see photo on left).
The Series offers a total cash prize pool of R40,000 in addition to numerous randomly awarded prizes.
The Series also offers a creative point system that is explained here.
Another far-forward-thinking aspect of the series includes the increased race distance during the second half of the series. In the first 6 races, the distances is 1K and 2K. Then, as the competitors get in better shape throughout the season, the initial 2K distance is lengthened to 3K beginning with the seventh race in the series.
The race dates at Hobie Beach in Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth include October 4th, October 18th, November 1st, November 15th, November 29th, January 12th, January 24th, February 14th, March 7th, March 21st and April 11th.
In very exciting news soon to be announced, Michael is also planning to organize a World Ocean Racing Series Championships for 2010.
