The Southern Pacific Masters Association (SPMA) offers a ranking system for its open water swimmers who compete in three or more its summer ocean swims.
According to the Southern Pacific Masters Association's preliminary rankings - that will be officially ratified and compiled shortly - the top Southern California ocean swimmers for the 2009 season include:
Men
19-24 years - Walid Wasfy
25-29 years - Mark Tripp
30-34 years - Andrew Burch
35-39 years - Michael Bergkvist
40-44 years - David Neilan
45-49 years - Parks Wesson
50-54 years - Andy Bray
55-59 years - Howard Burns (overall high point)
60-64 years - Bill Darby
65-69 years - Eric Anderson
Women
25-29 years - Merritt Johnson
30-34 years - Beth Weber
35-39 years - Laurie Dodd
40-44 years - Jill Keenan-Boline
45-49 years - Maureen MacDonald
50-54 years - Jenny Cook
55-59 years - Christie Ciraulo (overall high point)
60-64 years - Kathleen Nielsen
65-69 years - Ellen Shockro
70-74 years - Jeanne Little
Jenny Cook and Christie Ciraulo were nominated, along with their teammates, for the 2009 World Open Water Swimming Woman of the Year Award.
