Thomas Lurz finally lost a FINA 10KM Marathon Swimming World Cup race this year when Trent Grimsey of Australia surprisingly and comfortably beat him on the final 10K race of the pro circuit where 40 men and 35 women took to the waters in Hamriyah Beach in Ajman.
Today was obviously Trent's day.
With the number 1 on his shoulders and hands as his race number, Trent said, "My coach said you have to live up to your starting number. I looked back on the fifth lap and I saw no one. I knew I was going to win it from there. I never expected to win this comfortably and hopefully I can keep it up."
Lurz, 25 meters behind Trent, finished ahead of Russia's Evgeny Drattsev who got third. "I am the world 5K and 10K champion and, yes, maybe I would have liked to win here. But I saw [Trent] leading and I didn't want to push it unnecessarily because the conditions were tough and I didn't want the others to overtake me in the end. So I'm happy with this second place. But, I have won the overall championship, so this makes it a bit tougher because I must defend the title now."
But unlike her male counterpart, Poliana Okimoto left nothing to chance, finishing nearly 10 meters ahead of Russia's Larisa Ilchenko with Germany's Angela Maurer in third a few strokes behind.
