Thomas Lurz of Germany and Poliana Okimoto of Brazil won yet again - against the world's best - at the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup in Dubai today.
Thomas beat Vladimir Dyatchin of Russia and young Thomas Allen of Great Britain for the gold, while Poliana did the same to Angela Maurer of Germany and Larisa Ilchenko of Russia.
"Winning is an enjoyable feeling and this win is even more memorable because I like it here in Dubai," said Thomas - a sentiment shared by many of the top open water swimmers. Thomas conserved his energy early in the race and then took off at the 8K mark. "I just held in there at the back of the pack and decided to go strong on the final sprint."
In the women's race, Poliana swam by young American Eva Fabian in the later stages of the race and edged out Angela and Olympic 10K champion Larisa. "I'm very tired, but also very happy with this win today. After the next race, I will think of a nice vacation."
Both Thomas and Poliana certainly deserve a nice vacation after their efforts this pro season.
