This morning, the annual 9.6-mile Maui Channel Swim will start as it always has since 1972 when Ian Emberson started the popular event.
Many follow-up their channel relay with a solo event in the Maui 'Aumākua 2.4 Mile Swim as a new alternative to the annual Labor Day Waikiki Roughwater Swim held on Oahu.
Maui no ka 'oi is translated as 'Maui is the best' in the Hawaiian language.

Todd Robinson was 1st solo finisher of today's Maui Channel race and beat 46 of the 50 relay teams. Time was 3:54. Rough conditions 10-20 knot winds at times, 7-10' swells.
Thank you very much for the solo swimmer information. We noted Todd's remarkable swim in the story above.
