220 swimmers participated in the The Edge Sports Sandycove Island Challenge in Kinsale, Ireland this weekend. In the renowned English Channel training area where cold water and rough conditions provide an ideal venue for serious marathon swimmers, the swimmers enjoyed sunshine, calm seas and warm water temperatures near 15°C.
Chris Bryan, who trains at Swim Ireland’s High Performance Centre, set a new course record of 19:40, winning his third Sandycove Island Challenge in a row. Chris was followed closely by Alex Rathke and Christopher Mintern. Lucy Gaynor won the women’s race in 21:53, followed closely by last year’s winner Sarah Clifford and Susan Callanan.
In a generational battle enjoyed by the crowd, 12-year-old Connor Bohane of Cork finished in 26:31 beating his father by 3 seconds.
