How Much is Gold Worth?

Courtesy of WOWSA, Huntington Beach, California.

USA Swimming awarded US$30,000 to gold medalists, US$15,000 to silver medalists and US$7,500 for bronze medalists in Beijing.

Additionally, the United States Olympic Committee awarded US$25,000 for a gold, US$15,000 for a silver and US$10,000 for a bronze in an Operation Gold program. So, if an American swimmer won a gold medal, they earned US$55,000 total plus the additional incentive bonuses received from their sponsors.

So how does this compare to other countries? Olympic 10K Marathon Swim gold medalist Larisa Ilchenko reportedly received an apartment and 100,000 euros (US$127,169) for her Olympic 10 km victory.
