SwimTrek operates open water swimming tours to great locations in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Middle East and Northern Europe. In its latest newsletter, it offers a 3-day open water swimming trip to the annual
Finnish Winter Swimming Championships in
Imatra in eastern Finish which is on the Finnish-Russian border.
Participants can compete in a natural ice pool on February 6-8, 2009. Over 800 competitors are expected to swim in the pool that is created by cutting out a hole in the frozen river.

The
Winter Swimming Championships were held for the first time outside of Finland when 680 swimmers from 21 countries participated in the 2008
Winter Swimming Championships in
South London Swimming Club's
Tooting Bec Lido in 6ºC (42.8ºF) water.
The
Winter Swimming Championships was conceived in 2000 by the International Winter Swimming Association and Suomen Latu from Finland.
