Independence Day Swim

If you find yourself near Sacramento, California tomorrow, the July 4th Fire Cracker 8000 may be something special to try.

The July 4th Fire Cracker 8000 is a unique open water swim where the water temperature at the start is about 75°F (23.8°C), but gets progressively colder as the swimmers head upstream.

The swim is held in Lake Natoma in Folsom, California. The participants swim upstream near the Sacramento State Aquatics Center and finish at Negro Bar Beach 8 kilometers away where the water temperature is expected to be about 56°F (13.3°C).

A swim in a beautiful area against a slight current and increasingly colder waters makes for a very memorable open water swimming holiday.

Joe Dowd at JRDowd@aol.com is organizing the swim.

Joe said that swimmers from the Sierra Marlins Masters and Cal Fit will be heading upstream starting at 10 am July 4th from the Aquatics Center.

The finish this year will be at the Sudwerks Restaurant (4.48 miles), formally the Cliff House. There will be at least one rest stop along the way to refuel or just rest.

There may be about 25 swimmers doing it this year.

RSVP or just show up.
