50 Years Of Open Water Swimming Coverage

Swimming World Magazine, the American-based monthly swimming magazine, was first published as Junior Swimmer in 1960. Over the past 50 years, Swimming World Magazine has covered many open water races, topics and swimmers with 8 cover photos dedicated to our favorite topic.

In October 1962, Swimming World Magazine's cover photo was taken in Santa Barbara, California at the start of the David Gray Two Mile Ocean Swim. You may be surprised to see that no one is wearing goggles and few are wearing swim caps.

Two miles in the cold, salty sea and no goggles...how times have changed.

In November 1981, Swimming World Magazine's cover story was on Paul Asmuth who had just begun his dominance of the professional marathon swimming circuit, including an incredible win at the 24-hour La Tuque marathon race.

In April 1991, Swimming World Magazine's cover story was on Olympic champion Matt Biondi swimming with dolphins.

In October 2005, Swimming World Magazine's cover story was on world 10K champion Chip Peterson.

In November 2006, Swimming World Magazine's cover story was on Olympic 10K marathon swimmer and world championship medalist Chloe Sutton.

In July 2008, Swimming World Magazine's cover story was on Mark Warkentin who finished eighth in the inaugural Olympic 10K Marathon Swim.

In November 2008, Swimming World Magazine's cover story was on the annual RCP Tiburon Mile won by Australia's Trent Grimsey and Germany's Britta Kamrau.

This month's Swimming World Magazine's cover story is also on the RCP Tiburon Mile won by New Zealand's Kane Radford and Australia's Melissa Gorman.
