Women's Olympic 10K Marathon Swim Results and Pace

NBC Olympics.com covered the women's Olympic 10K Marathon Swim yesterday in its entirety.

It was a classic race under the pressure of the Olympic stage.

Based on their final time and the exact dimensions of the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim course, the top 13 swimmers averaged faster than 1 minute and 12 seconds per 100 meters.

1:12 per 100...without the benefits of wall push-offs (like they would have if they swam in a pool) and while taking drinks and gel packs en route.

What was very impressive was the fourth place finish by Angela Maurer of Germany. The 33-year-old nearly caught Cassandra Patten for third after taking a few years off to have a child. Only when Angela heard that open water swimming was added to the Beijing Olympics did she return to the water.
